Not every restaurant can just raise prices. If the customer doesn't see the value, or can't afford the new price, that business will go away.

What do you call paying a tip on a meal?

There are plenty of fancy restaurants that automatically put a gratuity in the price, and there are other restaurants that automatically do it for a certain amount of people at a table. They don't seem to be shedding jobs because of that practice.

Apparently there are no unintended consequences in the world Baron lives in.

No one is really putting the gratuity in the price because of the tip credit law.

They're doing it so their servers don't spend a lot,of time on a table only to get screwed over without a tip.

There would also be the consequence of restaurants that shed jobs not providing the level of service they would like to offer and pissing off customers. There's a balance to be struck.

Then what are the unintended consequences then? So far, we've had the tired old tripe of higher prices and it will cost jobs. Nevermind that customers pay more for their meal when they give a tip anyways.

It's not going to end tips. Even you just said this.

It's going to eliminate the sub-minimum wage. All it does is raise costs.

I think that there's a responsibility for people arguing about a proposal that will undoubtedly benefit many others to go beyond abstraction and discuss how said proposal would have a negative effect on their own lives economically. The "it'll cost jobs" stuff, besides being highly unproven as far as peer-reviewed research go, is just boilerplate bullshit. Bitching by restaurant owners, probably the most reactionary small business owners of them all -- not a knock, they depend on rich people for a living -- it's like wondering why PGA Tour pros are Republicans, doesn't cut it. YF, it's on you. How will YOUR food service business be affected by a minimum wage increase. Be specific and show your work.

Add the gratuity in the price. A $50 meal now becomes a $57.50 meal with a 15 percent gratuity. If the server only has one table per hour (which they don't anyways) that, plus the $2 an hour they're already making is now $9.50 an hour.

The additional cost will be absorbed in a combination of up to three ways: increased cost of meals, fewer waiters and less profit. Restaurant owners would all need to make the determination themselves. I'd bet most of the cost gets passed on to the consumer more often than not.
