There are now three or four separate memoirs by members of Bush's cabinet who all state that W was looking for a reason to take on Saddam Hussein at his first cabinet meeting. He knew damn well that the 9/11 bombers were largely Saudis, largely funded by Saudi money, trained in Afghanistan. The Bush business interests are intertwined with the Saudis, he wasn't going to go after them. We pounded Afghanistan quickly, and could have stayed there and kept a thumb on the Taliban and other radicals and terrorist groups there and across the Pakistanti border. We withdrew our troops and went into Iraq instead. GHW Bush was smart enough to know that if he kicked that hornet's nest the results would be impossible to control. W's neocon advisers thought that Bush 1 was a pussy for not finishing the job, and GWB wanted to pay Saddam back for the attempted assassination of his father in Kuwait, so in we went, fat dumb and happy. We paid for that misjudgement abundantly in blood, treasure, and by having our reputation in the region trashed.

    As I said.

And like Luggie said, history is going to look kindly upon Obama...on Bush, not so much (not that it looks lovingly at him now)...for much of our lives, Middle East troubles meant Israel v. the entire region. Thanks to Bush, it's now on fire everywhere.

Obama's popularity numbers today are within a couple of points of where Reagan's were at this point in his second term.

Before W, the Middle East loved America, and there was no in-fighting there. Traditionally, one of the world's more stable regions. Sad what it has become.
