And yet...

 

Where the hell was that during Primary season? I would say that people should be fired, but their jobs are gone anyway.

 

No, it isn't. The US has always had the policy of not defaulting on debts. And there is also that whole 14th amendment thing.

 

Trump's statement, as always, is what he considers to be an opening line in a negotiation.

It's all about putting the folks we do business with, that it's not going to be business as usual anymore.

It's a reminder to folks that we have leverage, and if they're unwilling to play ball with us, there are potential consequences.

(Which is no different than what the Saudis have done when they threatened to dump US real estate holdings if we allowed them to be held responsible for 9/11. China has threatened to dump our debt, and has manipulated its currency.)

So, Mexico can help reduce the flow of people across our border, or face consequences. NATO nations can contribute their fair share to their own defense, or face consequences. Companies can keep jobs in the US, or face consequences. China can engage in fair trade, or face consequences.

If people believe Trump will actually back up his words with action, then we'll be in a favorable position. We'll see compromise, and Trump's threats will never have to be acted upon.

If they think it's bluster, you get a situation like where Obama drew a red line, which Syria crossed, and faced no consequences, exposing Obama as a feckless, ineffective leader, afraid to follow through on his own promises.

And, while we're on the topic, let's not forget that while Trump is offering up ideas, Obama, while in the Senate, is the guy who actually voted against raising the debt ceiling, and who grandstanded on the issue.

 

Wow. Just wow. I'm sure I heard him say most of that along the way, and I knew he was never a Republican, but damn.

 

Yeah, all of that was stupid and it depends on believing other people are as stupid as it is for it to work.

It is based on the insipidly idiotic belief that the rest of the world are just freeloaders taking what isn't fairly theirs from Americans and we just need to crack down on them, when in reality the global system is largely built to keep America on top.

 

I would particularly like to know what "consequences" Mexico will face if people keep crossing the border. Is Trump going to send the bill for The Wall to collections?

 

He will stop buying taco salads from them.

 

Besides the general stupidity, it is never a bad time to remind that the idea of a "flow of people" across the border is especially stupid. Net illegal immigration from Mexico has been negative for almost a decade.

But folks just know there is a sea of funny-talking, non-white people pouring over the border.
