I hope this tidbit will be edited into Posnanski's epic poem.

Settlements are for alleged abuse that took place in 1971. The settlements were reached after 2011. Not defending Paterno, but the settlements do not indicate he knew of the 1971 abuse allegations.

Correct ... But they certainly demonstrate that it was going on for a long time. And the longer it was going on, the less likely it was Paterno had no inkling of it.

In 1971, Sandusky was a flunky bottom-rung assistant and Paterno was already a god in HV after his 1968-69 great seasons.

The idea at that point Sandusky would not have been fired for anything more serious than jaywalking is preposterous.

In 1998 or 2002 it could be argued that Sandusky was a trusted long term assistant who had been a key part of the program for decades and Paterno may have been swayed by loyalty. But not in 1971. In 1971 there was absolutely no fathomable reason why Paterno would not have chucked Sandusky overboard at the first hint he was engaged in behavior which could damage the program.

Right, Sandusky just didn't decide to start molesting kids in the '80s. But I wouldn't be shocked Sandusky could keep this hidden, even from Paterno, for several years.

In 1971 Paterno was already a god in college football. The idea he would not have been aware of potentially extremely damaging allegations against a bottom rung rookie assistant is absurd.

PSU didn't act in 1971; in 2011, it settled an abuse case that occurred in 1971.

And, somehow, Joe and Jerry were on the same staff and Paterno never once heard anything about Jerry being pederast for 30 years.

    Riiiiight.
