BYM gets confused a lot regarding the actual topic, so he should get a pass on accuracy. Any rational person knew Paterno eventually knew what was going on. The fact Penn State settled a case a few years ago for abuse that occurred in 1971 does not support, nor does it refute, any allegations Paterno knew what was going in 1971.

    The incident occurred in 1971.
    The payout occurred in 2011.

When was the incident brought to the attention of PSU?

I know they had some pretty good defenses but speaking strictly from a cynical standpoint, was he a good enough coach to have put up with this and cover it up all those years?

Funny how a dictatorial coach who controlled every single aspect of the program can claim no knowledge about one of his coaches molesting children.

There's been a lot of anger -- and jokes -- directed at the Catholic Church in the last number of years for how they handled the sexual abuse of children -- all of it deserved.

But, I think what we're discovering is that the Catholic Church was not alone in allowing, and covering up abuse.

From the Penn State case, to what happened at Horace Mann*, to what the Boston Globe uncovered at elite schools in New England*, to all of the instances we've seen involving hockey coaches, or other authority figures, this kind of thing was much more widespread than any of us wanted to believe.

Nearly every institution acted the same way.

And, for me, what's important is that institutions do not allow the kind of atmosphere that would both allow this kind of abuse to happen, and get covered up, to develop.

Has a single football program, boarding school, or travel hockey team taken any steps to prevent this kind of thing? Has anyone gone back and conducted an investigation to ensure their own institutions did not have these kind of problems?

If I run a college athletic program, or a prep school that boards students, I'm hiring an investigator and/or law firm to conduct an investigation. I'd want every coach/teacher, as well as every player/student over the last 40 years to be contacted and asked if they ever suffered or witnessed any kind of abuse.

For me, if you're not doing this, it's because you don't want to discover the truth.

The people who have the most power, i.e. the ones with the power to commission an investigation, are often the most complicit in situations like this.

Exhibit A: The Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Those in power may or may not have been fucking kids themselves, but they sure went out of their way to protect the ones who were.

I would really like to see a list of all the things Paterno needs to have be true (his version of true) over the years for him to be the man Penn State Truthers believe he is. Let's just start one.

-1976 The person who claims he talked to Paterno one the phone and claims he told Joe that Jerry raped him, he needs to be making it up. He needs to be financially motivated, and to have made up a story that he tells a friend and a state trooper later, before he ever gets paid in 2011.

-In the late 70s, an assistant coach witnesses Sandusky doing something inappropriate. He needs to be either making it up, or never told Paterno. Or this information needs to be incorrectly entered into the insurance settlement.

-two more assistants witnessed sexual contact with Sandusky and kids in 1987 and 1988. They also need to be making this up, and or, have never told Joe Paterno. Or this information needs to be fabricated, yet somehow it makes it into judge's written statement about the insurance claim.

-Three times in the 1990s, assistants claim they say Sandusky doing inappropriate shit with kids, including his own son, Matt. According to NBC, one assistant enters a room and says "You won't believe what I just say." All these assistants need to have been making this up or never told Joe Paterno. Or, if somehow this information did reach Paterno, he was powerless to do anything about it at a time in his life when he was picking his own athletic director.

-In 1998, police investigate Sandusky for showering and hugging a 1o-year-old boy. Paterno is following this closely, despite later grand jury testimony suggesting otherwise, according to notes taken by the school. Gary Schultz, in his private notes, wonders "Is this a Pandora's Box? ... Other kids?" Paterno, we are asked to believe, wonders none of this. University Police Chief Thomas Harmon e-mails Schultz: "We're going to hold off on making any crime log entry. At this point in time I can justify that decision because of the lack of clear evidence of a crime." Curley tells Schultz and Spanier that he has "touched base with" Paterno about the incident. Later, Curley asks Schultz for an update, saying "Coach is anxious to know where it stands." At a Board of Trustees meeting, Spanier does not notify the board of the ongoing investigation. The district attorney declines to bring charges against Sandusky.

-Whoa, surprise, Sandusky says he is considering retirement. This has NOTHING to do with the investigation, we're asked to believe. (It's weird how often we're asked to give Penn State and Paterno the benefit of doubt in circumstantial situations.) Sandusky wants "to maintain a long-term relationship with the University" and gets an unusual lump sum payment of $168,000, an agreement for the university to "work collaboratively" with Sandusky on The Second Mile and other community activities, and free lifetime use of locker room facilities. As the retirement package is being finalized, Curley (not Paterno?????) requests the emergency rehire of Sandusky for the 1999 football season, which is approved.

-December 1999, Sandusky brings a kid to the 1999 Alamo Bowl in Texas and assaults him at the team hotel.

-November 2000, Sandusky assaults another kid in the building showers. A janitor observes the assault, but does not report it for fear that "they'll get rid of all of us." We are again asked to believe that he keeps this entirely to himself.

-February 9, 2001, Mike McQueary witnesses Sandusky's assault on a kid in the Lasch Building shower. The contention that Truthers would like you to believe is that he changes his story several times, or that he didn't see something significant enough to explain to Paterno the gravity of the situation, or that he was essentially a coward because he didn't smash Sandusky's head against the wall. Whatever that may be, McQueary, who was raised in Happy Valley and essentially bred to believe that Joe Paterno was a god, is so shaken by what he saw he tells his father who says he has to tell Paterno. Truthers want us to believe that McQueary ONLY DID THIS because he had a gambling problem and because he sent dick pics to a Penn State co-ed, and he need this to go away and was worried he was going to get in trouble. Or something. Somehow McQueary's personal issues invalidate his entire recounting of this incident.

-February 10, 2001. McQueary reports the assault to Paterno a day after it happened. Paterno later testifies that McQueary said he thought the assault was "sexual in nature" but the Paterno Truthers would like to you believe this was a vague and not fair description by McQueary to Paterno.

-February 11, Paterno reports the incident to Curley and Schultz. Schultz then consults with university outside counsel. At this point, we are asked to believe that Paterno — who hand-picked Curley to be his boss — was powerless to do anything else about this situation, and that the minimum legally required of him was enough.

-February 12. Spanier, Schultz and Curley meet. Schultz's notes indicate he spoke to Curley, reviewed the history of the 1998 incident, (you know, that one were the defensive coordinator was investigated for molesting children) and agreed that Curley would discuss the incident with Paterno and recommend that Curley meet with Sandusky. Schultz asks Harmon if the report of the 1998 incident is in police files; Harmon responds that it is.

-February 25-26. Spanier, Schultz and Curley meet and devise an action plan, which includes telling the board of Second Mile, reporting the incident to the Department of Welfare, and telling Sandusky to avoid bringing children alone into the Lasch Building. We are again asked to believe that Paterno is not looped into any of these conversations.

-February 27-28, 2001Curley proposes a new plan to Spanier and Schultz: to tell Sandusky "we feel there is a problem" and offer him "professional help." "If he is cooperative we would work with him to handle informing" The Second Mile, Curley wrote in an e-mail, adding that if Sandusky does not cooperate, "we don't have a choice and will inform" the state Department of Public Welfare and The Second Mile. "Additionally, I will let him know that his guests are not permitted to use our facilities." Think about that for a minute. His guests.

-February 27-28, 2001. Spanier e-mails Curley and Schultz: "This approach is acceptable to me. ... The only downside for us is if the message isn't 'heard' and acted upon, and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it. But that can be assessed down the road."
Schultz concurs with the plan, saying in an e-mail, "this is a more humane and upfront way to handle this." Schultz adds, "we can play it by ear" regarding informing DPW of the assault. Again, we are asked to believe that the most powerful man on campus, the most important figure to the entire university, does not follow up and is not made aware of any of what is going on here. One of his assistant coaches and former players has told him that one of his longest-serving assistants raped a child in the team facilities, but Paterno never follows up on what was done, and does not seem concerned at all that this man (who Paterno Truthers will have you believe he did not like) kept showing up for the next 10 years on campus.

I mean... c'mon. At some point, get real.

If you dive at all into the weird waters that John Ziegler guy swims in (he's the main truther) he not only believes JoePa is innocent, but that SANDUSKY is innocent and that its all lies. That's the man these Truthers are taking their cues from.
