What you're arguing is much more nuanced than what Alma has written here, and a position that has some merit. What we're seeing in practice, though, isn't some confused kid showing up at school one day who wants to go from being little Bobby to being Bobbie Sue and demanding everyone acquiesce. Except for in the very youngest of transgender children, transitioning is a fairly lengthy journey that's often accompanied with a gender dysphoria diagnosis and treatment.

The harm done to a transgender child by forcing them to conform with societal gender constructs that go against their identity is far greater than any harm that may be done to the questioning youth who experiments a bit with where they fit on the gender spectrum and is given room to do that safely.

But, shouldn't this be an issue worked on at home with family and not at school? I have some friends with kids here in Central MD who were absolutely pissed at some of the discussions a teacher had with one of their kids.

Reminds me of the school prayer issues of the 1960s and 1970s.

    Gradually, then suddenly ...

"Worked on" is kind of an odd choice of words. Schools can't put blinders on during the 30-plus hours a week transgender kids are in their care. They need to deal with the reality.

I'm not saying Alma is among them, but the majority of the people who are whipped up in a frenzy over this thing view all transgenders as those crazy, drunk guys in drag on the subway.

That's what they think this is all about, and apparently have no desire to seek greater understanding of it. #Trumpworld

Hmmmmmm ... did you struggle as much with that word as I did with "experiencing"?

Yes, but stipulating that those crazy, drunk guys on the subway also fall under the auspices of these protective initiatives ... Is it so wrong to think that allowing them free rein might be a bad idea?

My thinking is I wouldn't want my son OR my daughter sharing a bathroom with those weirdos, so maybe the issue is that they are mentally unstable, period, not that they may or may not be using the "wrong" bathroom.

That's where, to me, this whole kerfuffle misses the forest for the trees.

The idea that these laws are being passed to protect the rights of people like the guy in Songbird's post is ridiculous.

It does seem to me like we are trying to solve something that isn't a problem.

There appears to be a lot of concern about men/boys saying they identify as female for the pure pleasure of entering a women's restroom/locker room.

I would think forcing someone who presents as one gender to use the bathroom of the other gender would cause more problems for everyone involved.
