HBO's True Detective

'Rome' remains my favorite HBO show.

 

Favorite HBO Drama: The Wire, but there are several contenders.

Favorite Comedy: Can't choose between Curb and Flight of the Conchords.

Most Underrated: The Life and Times of Tim.

 

My top 5 favorite HBO shows of all-time, minus The Sopranos and Curb, which I haven't seen:

1. Deadwood
2. Game of Thrones
3. The Wire
4. Eastbound and Down
5. Entourage

Veep will probably creep into the top 4 eventually. And True Detective season 1 was my favorite single season of HBO television. Maybe of any television.

 

True Detective was a one-hit wonder; alas, it got two at-bats.

It's better than Cathouse: The Series.

 

Hot take: Isabella Soprano > The Sopranos.

 

My top 5 HBO shows (and BTW, Mr. Reacher, you never watched Sopranos OR Curb?! Jesus, you're really missing out. At least rip through Curb on streaming. If nothing else, watch the episode where Larry gets a pube stuck in his throat...)

5.) First and Ten. (I'm kinda joking, but that was sort of Playmakers before Playmakers, with a ton of modern NFL-player cameos)
4.) Dream On (GREAT pre-Internet sortcore! AND pretty funny)
4B.) Entourage
3.) Boardwalk Empire (fizzled out at the end, but some great acting, especially by the masked character)
2.) True Detective (mainly season 1)
1.) Sopranos. I loved every bit of it. Every episode, some wise guy mouthed off and ended up dumped in a shallow grave. (BTW: my favorite single episode of TV EVER: Pine Barrens, which, I might add, remains an unsolved mystery, as the Russian was never proven to be dead...)

 

In no particular order: Oz, Deadwood, John Adams, Band of Brothers and From the Earth to the Moon.*

* The Wire goes without saying.

 

I hear ya, Drebin. I tried to watch Sopranos. Watched the first two or three eps and just couldn't get into it for some reason. I'm intrigued by Curb, but aren't there like a million episodes?
