The biggest reason is to create inevitability for the clear winner to discourage a petulant convention fight. It isn't working this time because Sanders is doing his best impression of the Black Knight from the Holy Grail.

The presumptive nominee has always been declared this way. Sanders congratulated Obama on winning the nomination in 2008 under the same circumstances.

I know you hope that, because you are an extremely dishonest person.

Here's the funny thing: Pledged delegates don't vote until the convention either, and the wording of the rule would allow them to change their vote if they believe they had a reason of good conscience or to reflect the sentiments of the electorate.

So really the score is 0-0.

Hillary was closer to Obama at this point eight years ago (Florida and Michigan be damned). There is no criteria where Bernie outpoints HRC except for rally attendance and social media posts.

This is when the fact he's not actually a Democrat could be disastrous. In any other situation, the trailing candidate concedes and starts bringing people together.

Will Bernie do that? Given no indication so far. But if his goal REALLY is for Trump to lose and have a major part in reshaping the party platform, then he needs to start bringing his people into the Clinton camp.

If he doesn't do that, then he's pretty much been full of shit.

If he doesn't do that, and the Dems flip the Senate with a margin of more then one, which is looking more and more likely, Bernie might as well fold up his camp stool and go home: FAIAP his Senate career will be over, he'll be a caucus of one, because the Dems will tell him to go suck a dick and Repubes consider him radioactive anyway.

If the Senate is 50 Republicans, 49 Democrats and Sanders, no way do the Democrats tell him anything. It will really be fun if the Democrats NEED him in the Senate.

Most projections now say it should be a 2-3 vote margin, with the needles pointing up.
