Not to everybody it isn't. You can quibble about the percentages, but there is a very large part of the population in this country that would have no problem at all with letting that particular principle go.

Perhaps because it is that simple? If part of the Bill of Rights is not considered a bedrock principle of this country, then what is? More importantly, why isn't it?

Until some time in the 20th century it was assumed that the Bill of Rights only applied to actions by the federal government, not the states.

And there's obviously a very large part of the population would have a very, very large problem with letting it go.

If it was repealed, the vast majority of law-abiding citizens would see virtually nothing change. But states would be able to regulate this morass without worrying about the Constitution. It would be a policy debate, pure and simple.

Countries are much freer when only the government is armed.

People would still be armed. People still have cars. They just don't get to have race cars.

If you're going to play it out, the likely scenario would be a civil war situation.

Either a military coup, or some portion of the military supporting a President excerting extra-constitutional powers.

In either case, the military would split. Only some units would support the coup/President.

But, law and order could break down in such a situation.
