George McGovern gets the booby prize. Only got 37.5 percent of the vote. Carried Massachusetts and D.C.

Goldwater got 38.5 percent and won 6 states.

'84 was the first election I remember. My class even had a mock vote, and Reagan won pretty handily.

I remember going to the polls with my Mom, running some errands, then coming home and watching a whole bunch of red on the map. After a while, Mom was, "Turn it off. I'm tired of seeing red."

McGovern-Nixon's the first one I remember. They had a mock election among the 5th graders. McGoo got 2 votes (one was mine)!

Were those 6 states he was proud of winning though?

The race was called that year at 7 p.m. CST. A no-doubter.

The graphics in 1984 were surprisingly good for the time.

My girlfriend then (who's now my wife) and I watched that with her parents. All of them (and me then) were avid Democrats. We weren't the least bit surprised, and we were relieved in a way. They went on to bed and she and I switched over to an independent station and watched 2001: A Space Odyssey.
