Tony's argument is the dumbest fucking argument I've ever heard, on almost any topic, and it's sad that it actually gets traction. Yes, on occasion, people use other weapons to kill people. I read a story in the paper today about someone killing someone with a beer bottle. That doesn't make it equivalent to a goddamn semi-automatic rifle. Stop embarrassing yourself. Guns are killing machines. High-powered guns are really efficient killing machines. You want to defend guns, be my guest. Give me a reasonable defense of them. But stop pretending they are equivalent to every other object creatively utilized to murder someone.

The guy quoted in the story didn't say that it doesn't matter if Mateen was gay, we're still learning a valuable lesson. He said the precise opposite. He said that if Mateen is gay, then there might be a valuable lesson there. He didn't say what you attributed to him. Not at all.

In my younger days, I literally had a guy point a .22 rifle at my head from about a foot away. I told him if he pulled the trigger, I would kick his ass. I doubt I would have done that if the guy had an assault rifle.

Oh, and in my defense, I thought it was a BB gun.

    He said the opposite.

But the whole idea that it would be somehow "better" if he was gay, because it could help "start a conversation" is silliness.

And, that's the wish of the media -- clearly. They would much rather have a homophobia in religion conversation than an Islamic terror conversation.

It's the only reason why this guy's otherwise irrelevant quote is included.

There's a hope that there could be a teachable moment in all of this!

And, it's why despite no evidence that Mateenwas gay, it's still an open question as far as the Times is concerned.

Perhaps. But this is not what you said.

You should subpoena their meeting notes.

Isn't that always the defense of reporting on the inner lives of these shooters?

    As well as the FBI.

The Times story basically does everything it can to debunk the "Mateen is gay" story. Like I said, this could have run in the National Review.

It's always the user, not the tool. Someone who thinks he's so brilliant should be able to gather that.

Of course it's the user. That's why I favor checking the people who want to use guns out before they buy them.

No shit, genius. Point is, you can't maim/kill hundreds of people with a beer bottle.

Cars with a top speed of 100 mph or more kill a lot more people than cars with a top speed of 20 mph. We need to keep those faster cars out of the hands of people.
