Around the turn of the century the parties changed platforms. Conservatives have always been conservative, and Democrats have always been progressive. But in the 1800s, "conervatives" called themselves "Democrats" and "progressives" called themselves "Republican."

The people who supported slavery called themselves "Democrats", but they were conservative and espoused most of the conservative values you hold dear today.

So when you poke fun at "Democrats" for ANYTHING that the party supported in the 19th century, you are, in fact, poking fun at conservatives.

Just like Democrats blame Republicans for what Democrats do with guns, Democrats blame Republicans for what Democrats did a few years back. It would be really funny if it wasn't so transparent.

Meanwhile, you and your article from the liberal think tank claim the change came around 1900, yet Democrats were strongly against the Civil Rights laws of the 1960s. Those laws only passed because of huge Republican support.

 

Tony, you've got to stop getting hung up on "parties". Today's "we won't compromise or budge from our ideology" parties didn't exist generations ago. Like a leopard, "conservatives" and "progressives" don't tend to change their spots. But their "party" affiliation can and does change. Example from the civil rights vote you referenced:

Nearly 100% of Union state Democrats supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act compared to 85% of Republicans. None of the southern Republicans voted for the bill, while a small percentage of southern Democrats did.

Geography mattered for this vote much more than "party" affiliation. "Progressives" --- whether they call themselves Republican or Democrat --- tend to be for inclusion. "Conservatives" --- whether they call themselves Republican or Democrat --- tend to be against it.
