It's much more complex than that. Hell, it's worse than that, in a sense, because of the rationalizations and complexities. But it's much more complex.

I think at least some of the motivation was the ruinous idea that the leaders of the church, and the scouts, and Penn State could control the situation better than if these pedophiles were "turned loose" into the world. That, within the structure of the system, pedophiles were "better off" and "more controlled."

It's ludicrous, looking back, but I think it's more accurate than "well, they just didn't give a fuck!"

The scary thing is...I think they did.

And they hurt a lot of kids in the process because of that.

What do you want me to say? The lines struck me as on the nose. Maybe it was, indeed, exactly that on the nose when it happened.

Delusion is also strong. I wondered if they knew some of these guys "liked" boys but convinved themselves that they didn't act on it and couldn't imagine anything "serious" happening.

Not excusing it. Just can't think of a rational explanation.

Remember, Penn State was also one that put itself high on a pedestal - always claiming to do things "the right way," "success with honor" and all of that other bullshit. So, when you're acting this pious you can't have any visible wounds. I really think a lot of this was to keep up perceptions. Same thing goes for the church, which knew damn well it couldn't tell other how to live their lives while a rape factory was kicking at their house.

    Yep. But, "coach" encompasses him.

Everyone in his little town surely heard rumors that he "liked young boys".

I think you're painting with a pretty broad brush, to say that "everyone" turned a blind eye to child molestation.

Every kid who went to Catholic schools in the '70s and early '80s could tell you what teachers "liked young boys".

If it was obvious to a bunch of dumb kids, it was obvious to fellow teachers and administrators.

And, these teachers were always the ones who arranged overnight trips, who volunteered to drive kids home, who were most interested in "mentoring" kids with family issues.

Hell, the whole fucking world watched as Michael Jackson groomed young boys in public.

We couldn't prove what was happening, but the people closest to him surely could.

The same thing goes for the people who protected Sandusky, and every other predator.

I went to Catholic school in the 70s and 80s and I can certainly tell you that no kids I knew were onto what teachers liked young boys. Again, broad brushing. You're basically saying all my grammar school basketball coaches and Little League coaches were perverts, and that's simply not true.

Wrong. "Everyone" did not have inside knowlege here. Not even close.

    YF logic:
    Paterno ---> Administration ---> School ---> Town ---> Region ---> Yinzers (!) ---> Everyone.

Kids at my Catholic school in the 70s and my prep school in the 80s knew what priests and teachers and Scout Masters liked little boys. I knew kids who learned this first-hand.
