When you blame the media for the story still going, you are defending him. When you try to twist the argument from an evaluation of Trump based on what he said to focus on whether or not it will hurt him, you are defending him.

But let's clear this up right now. Was Trump wrong in what he said?

At the convention? Uh, no. The whole point was that giving them a speaking role at the convention removes "average American" from their title. Joe the Plumber was a guy who got Obama to admit to his socialist leanings. The "coverage" he got was the media working to take him apart for exposing their hero.

The Trump apologists around the country -- especially gutless leaders like Ryan, McConnell, McCain et al -- remind me of a political slogan used by a dictator in Liberia in the 90s: "He killed my ma, he killed my pa, but I will vote for him."
    Donald Trump, meet Charles Taylor.

Point of order: Did the GOP also use dead soldiers as a pawn when they let Benghazi soldiers speak at their convention?

Simple: He was officially nominated. For a year he was a curiosity, a ratings hit in a crowded Republican race.

Now he's the GOP candidate. He and Clinton are the only major party candidates left (Johnson and Stein may not even make the debates). Clinton's been a politician for decades. She's been publicly vetted by the press. The only thing they'll jump on her about is new stuff, or stuff that she buried and is only now coming out.

Trump is getting publicly vetted now. The press is digging and it's finding plenty of good stuff - and that's on top of what Trump is handing over to them with his hourly gaffes.

In other words, it got serious. And that's when the media kicks the campaign coverage into a high gear.

This was the point, I think. We lefties apparently hammered them for it but praised "our side." In reality, this lefty thought the mom was one of the more interesting speakers at the RNC.
