    So you're saying the fact that major banks were allowed to have trading desks post Glass Steagall was not a major factor in meltdown?

    It's only a ridiculous belief when you inadvertently -- or deliberately -- leave out the "as compared to what?" part of the question.

    The vast majority of the time, "the markets" do regulate themselves. And when they don't, there's hardly anyone who knows it -- and what to do about it -- until it's too late. Sure, you can trot out your Brooksley Born. She's far and away the exception rather than the rule. What we might call the "rule" of regulation is little piglets doing their best to expand their little section of the trough ... or to at least make sure that section stays off-limits to anyone else.
