The World According to Garp was on late last night on Cinemax. I recorded it and watched this morning.

Robin Williams' first serious role. Glenn Close's first major role. I'm intrigued by how Close is actually just one year older than Mary Beth Hurt, who plays Garp's wife.

I watched Bull Durham two days ago. I remember having some vague negative reaction to it when it first came out. I guess I was mad at baseball at the time.

I really enjoyed it a lot more this time. A reallyfun look at minor-league baseball that seemed genuine The dialogue between Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon (though often quoted) was probably the least interesting and most forced, it seemed.

Sorry, neglected to say I've always loved it. Saw it many years ago and actually still own a VHS copy.

I've never read John Irving. I've long been meaning to read something.
What would anyone recommend as a start?

The World According to Garp and A Prayer for Owen Meany are among his best IMO.

    Maybe I'll start with 'Garp.'
What about 'Hotel New Hampshire'? I'm one of the few people who liked the movie.

I should have added that. Those 3 are my favourite.

Good. Maybe I'll start with 'Hotel New Hampshire.' I was thinking of that anyway.

I can follow up with 'Garp' and 'Owen Meany'

Just go into knowing this. In every John Irving novel someone will:
    a) wrestle
    b) live in Vienna

    ;)

    Those are my two Irving favs (read several others 2). Meany is sorely underrated;

    Cider House Rules too

I was a terrible scholastic wrestler once, but I've never been to Austria.

Anyway, I've really been fixated on weird fiction and old pulp novels for a long time now, almost obsessively.
I'm just about finished ERB's original 'Tarzan of the Apes.' I'd read his John Carter series as a youngster and thought I'd give this a try.
But my fiction choices have all been weird fiction and old pulp for about two-three years now. It's crazy. I don't know how I got so fixated on it.
I need to change my fiction palette, and I think Irving's 'Hotel New Hampshire' is going to be it.

FYI, if anyone digs weird fiction, here's a great site to read some short work:
