They've narrowed the gap with white Americans in education, voter turnout, access to health care and income.

In 2012, 67 percent of eligible black voters turned out for the election, while 64 percent of eligible white voters cast their ballots. That doesn't happen without the VRA.

In 1964, just 27 percent of blacks age 25 and older held a high school diploma. Today, that number is 88 percent. Meanwhile, 51 percent of whites held a high school diploma in 1964 and today that number is 93 percent. Blacks would not have closed that education gap without the CRA.

Life expectancy for blacks rose from 63.6 years in 1960 to 75.1 years, while life expectancy for whites rose from 70.6 to 78.9. That wouldn't have happened without the the CRA.

It's not difficult at all to see how the CRA/VRA improved the lives of African Americans. They still face challenges for sure, but please, let's not act like those pieces of Democratic legislation did not provably, demonstrably improve the lives of African Americans.

If students in your classes "tried" to pass the way the conservative movement "tries" to win Aftican American voters, you'd not only flunk them but you'd pull them aside to ask if they'd considered truck driving school.

Isn't that the argument for why certain provisions are no longer needed?

You mean the percentage increase of anything will look more dramatic coming off a base of near zero versus subsequent gains measured against the new baseline? Well no shit.

Percentages divorced from absolute numbers and context are meaningless at best and misleading at worst. You understand that better than anyone on this board.

And let us now flip the "Hey, what have you got to lose?" argument around and apply it to poor white folks who constantly vote for the GOP ...

"For generations, you have been giving your vote to the Republicans, and what has it gotten you? Nothing! Your lives are a catastrophe, believe me. You have no health care, your children are all dying of meth and heroin, you have no education, you are shooting yourselves with your own guns on accident every day. So sad. Just a disaster."

If you're talking about material possessions or net worth ? I'm not sure, but I do know that a slave can have a lot of material possessions without freedom.

    What defines "better off" ?

Freedom is priceless and not quantifiable.

What about the right to vote, and to do so without being harassed ?

The right to pursue an education ?

The right to aspire-- realistically-- to be at the top of your chosen profession, to start your own business, or to be President of the United States ?

There's poverty, and there's poverty without hope.

Press conferences are dumb - especially if a reporter uses "talk about."
