Every time the media report the unemployment number the first thing they say is "XXXX number of people applied for unemployment ..." and the unemployment rate rose/fell/stayed the same. It's definitely at least a part of the equation.

The Current Population Survey is the basis for government unemployment estimates. I'm not sure of all the details, but it's a huge sample ... something like 25,000 people/households on a rolling basis.

 

How would you know? You could argue that the world is flat, watch as 99 percent of the board presented scientific evidence that eviscerates your argument and you still wouldn't admit you had been proven wrong.
