Charles Pierce and Bill Simmons are two notable ones.

A lot of Pierce's acolytes were very excited when Pierce took Simmons on. They were particularly boisterous at a Web site they like to gather at, similar to this one. Within a couple weeks, Pierce was working for Simmons. They had to feel very let down, but I won't presume to speak for @dixiehack and others.

Sports radio guys and rappers (separately) love a good public feud.

Howard Stern's national syndication was built on public feuds. Letterman's rise was propelled by them as well.

 

It makes one wonder if some of the all-time SJ.com feuds were engineered for ratings, particularly some of the many engaged in by the Good Doctor.
