Things that make you feel old

That's interesting. I would think out of all the original Trek actors, Shatner's been the one who's done the best job of staying relevant in pop culture through the years.

 

• Waking up
• the punishing ferocity of my hangovers on those rare occasions when I can enjoy more than a polite out amount of adult beverages
• The constant stream of marketing, TV, movies and music for which I am not the intended audience: I don't like it, and the people who create it are fine with that because they didn't make it with me in mind.
• international news
• national news
• local news
• the terrible quality of our local newspapers and local news TV broadcasts
• political discourse
• not smoking
• dumb male fashion trends
• dumb people
• people
• balding
• gray facial hair
• time
• life

 

Let's add a couple:

• declining health
  
• gloom
• despair
• and agony on me
• deep, dark depression
• excessive misery
• bad luck
• no luck at all

 

One spring when I was a doctoral student, I happened into teaching a particularly strong section of undergrads who were about to graduate.

They're entering their 40s now.

 

On the bright side, I like being middle aged, and I look forward to being an old man.
Not too old. I'm not into that, but definitely a senior.

 

I don't know if anyone else got this, but I did. Well done.

Gray hair on my head is fine, actually kind of like it, but the emergence of grays elsewhere is an unwelcome development for this single 44-year-old.

 

My dad made me watch Hee Haw when I was a kid, and I generally hated it. It wasn't until I was older, in my teenage years and crossing into the court jester pervert stage that you all know me as today, that I realized my dad liked to watch that show for all the young women in very short cutoff jeans.

I liked the cornfield scene too. Population, xxx, Salute!

 

I remember reading an article in some zine or alternative weekly that argued Hee Haw was a work of post-modern comedy. A bit of 1990s social commentary you got only from overeducated liberal arts majors.
