Amy Schumer on finding self confidence

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by Double Down, Apr 20, 2015.

  1. Heading the way of the Dixie Chicks?
200 folks walked out of her show after she dissed Trump and a pulled a few of his supporters out of the audience to question them.

Obviously, she plays to a little different crowd/fan base than the Dixie Chicks, but this is likely not going to be good for her career.

Making fun of Trump is not going to hurt any comedian's career, other than the fact it's been done to death and it's getting tougher to do it in a way that's clever or original. I like Schumer, but you got to do better than point put he's orange at this point.

  3. Except she did a lot more than make fun of Trump. She lambasted his supporters, some of which were in her audience.
HUGE difference between mocking a candidate and mocking his voters (your audience).

Eh, comics make fun of people. 200 out of 20,000 left. It's not going to be a big deal.

You can't possibly believe this is going to be a bad thing.

Trump voters deserve to be mocked.

It doesn't really compare to the Dixie Chicks at all. The Dixie Chicks lost country radio and corporate sponsors at a time when Bush still had good approval ratings. Schumer isn't going to ever lose Comedy Central, HBO, Universal or anybody important to her for mocking Trump supporters. It's not like they are cancelling late night talk shows left and right.

I have a friend who was at that show. She was not kicked out, but she went on a Facebook rant about it. I'm not positive if she's a Trump supporter (she leans GOP, but Trump is a different animal altogether), or if she was just upset that Schumer wasn't particularly funny and used her time to talk more about politics than to crack jokes.

Her FB screed focused on the latter, but I'm not ruling out the former.

This isn't any kind of good at all, because the male Dane Cook needs to be taken out and have the shit beat out of him.

    Let's see:

Very quick ascension in a business where it is rare - check
Very large and passionate fanbase who lap up everything you do - check
Selling out arenas despite having a C-plus act at best - check
Accusations of joke thievery - check
Overexposure like a mother - check
Signs of a downward spiral though act - check

Is this in reference to her show in Atlanta on Saturday? I was at that show and did see a large number of people walking out when she started getting political. She attempted to bring a Trump supporter on stage who was yelling at her but he wouldn't budge. I saw another rather drunk and loud heckler (I'm assuming he was heckling about Trump) get escorted out.

I am by no means a Trump supporter, but I do think she made a mistake by stereotyping all Trump supporters as gun-toting redneck racists during her show. If you are geniuinely trying to bring people to your side, that tact is only going to make people dig their heels in even harder, especially in the deep south. And that can be said about both sides of this election. It just does nothing to help actual political discourse, if that is in fact what she wants to have.

But back to Schumer: She did say that she knew doing that and going political was going to likely cost her fans and that she didn't give a shit, and I believe her. She has a stage and that is how she has decided to use it. There will be enough people leftover that will be fans of hers that she will be fine. She may not be able to sell out Phillips Arena anymore, but she will still have a career.
