That's incorrect. Teddy filled in for almost all of McKinley's second term, then was elected for a full term in his own right. After stepping aside for Taft's first (and only) term, Teddy tried for another of his own (which would have given him close to 12 years in office) first by going for the Republican nomination, then by forming (and being the nominee of) the Progressive Party.

 

All true, plus it was a big surprise at the time when he stepped away from the 2008 election, indicating there was not massive public resistance to the idea.

 

Yeah, Teddy was the only one to seriously try for a third term. As I posted a page or so above, a few others made brief and mostly doomed attempts at it.

 

Well, to be fair, we still have three weeks to go before Obama suspends the election, declares martial law and installs himself as emperor.
