I'm as pissed off as the next Democrat. My country suddenly looks more racist, biggoted and less friendly to those who challenge conservative norms. I'm sad. But just like we wanted Trump and the GOP to respect the process and not act like hooligans. Tomorrow will come, our lives will go on and our friends will still be our friends. We can course correct in 2018 and/or 2020 if things get bad. But we need to be Americans and keep going.

For all of the talk about xenophobia, racism, etc., I think we're going to look back on this election as one that was actually about the issues.
Trump, for the most part, based his campaign on things affecting people's lives. Yes, there was some fear mongering in there, but he hammered well the themes of bad trade deals, a shaky economy, illegal immigration, Washington corruption/cronyism, and a longstanding notion that our federal government isn't working in the bests interests of the American people. When he stayed on that message like he did in the past week to 10 days, and takes it to the right areas of the country, he's going to strike a chord with people.
Meanwhile, Hillary was running the same old playbook that Democrats have run for the past three elections at least. She played the personal attacks card which, while warranted, people didn't give a damn about this time around. And, in perhaps one of the great ironies in history, part of the reason Trump's character didn't matter was because of the way her husband nudged the bar and made some of that behavior more socially acceptable. If Trump ran for president in 1992 or 1996, his character issues would have been a death blow. Post-Clinton, Trump is a creep but it just didn't feel like as big a deal as it would have in the 90s.

Anyway, Hillary ran a campaign that she would have won 20 years ago. She did not run a campaign that would win in 2016. Her message was stale and she had a lot of baggage herself. People wanted something new and fresh, and she wasn't it. After a while they saw through it and asked, "What else ya got?" and the answer was "nothing."
While she was hammering Trump on character issues in the final days of the campaign -- the same beats she'd been hitting all along -- Trump, to his credit, busted his ass on the trail and stayed on point. He's been hitting three or four states a day the past week. People were looking for an excuse not to vote for Hillary and he gave it to them.
Hillary hit a deep fly ball and broke into a home run trot, and is about to get thrown out at second after it hit off the wall.

Now, as always, the challenge is can he govern as well as he campaigned? Most people think no. I think opponents have thought the same thing about damn near every president we've ever had. Even George Washington had to ride out and personally quell a rebellion by a bunch of liquored up hillbillies. We won't have much choice but to give him a chance to run with the ball. God willing, if it doesn't work out we'll get to send him packing in four years.
