The open letters to their children on Facebook are the best.

Did any Republican do something like this in 2008?

Just curious how you pay someone below market wages? I mean without the use of force, which I presume isn't happening to any large degree in this country.

I'd guess that illegal immigrants are getting EXACTLY what the market dictates as a wage for their work. Actually, that isn't a guess. It's an obvious reality.

I'd also guess that like everyone else, someone in the country illegally has a choice. Illegal immigrants may be faced with a series of choices that you have deemed crappy. Most of us would agree. But that is a lot of peoples' lives . You don't take work in the U.S. at whatever wage you command unless that option is a better choice than your other options -- say whatever work you were scrounging up where you lived before coming to the U.S. illegally.

My grandmother -- a legal immigrant -- was widowed when my mom was 7 and worked in sweat shops earning shitty wages. She didn't think in terms of "below market." Or about demonizing the person willing to pay her a wage for something. She thought in terms of the reality she was living. She needed to feed two kids and herself and that was the option she had given the skills she had and the leverage she had to negotiate a wage.

I just don't understand why you need to "demonize" anyone. An employer hires an illegal immigrant for the obvious reasons. They are a source of cheap labor. That cheap labor takes those jobs for obvious reasons. It's the best option life has given them. Most people measure up their options and they make the best choice for themselves.

That ABC is calling him a possible Homeland Security secretary is a joke.

    What is that based on?

Almost all of the "reporting" about Trump's cabinet is pure speculation.

Well, there's this pesky minimum-wage law, which I'm sure you hate, that is kinda supposed to set a floor for what "market" wages should be. But if I'm undocumented, I'm sure as hell not gonna go to the EEOC or whatever and complain about it if my boss isn't following said law. Therefore, the business owner now, in effect, owns me too. Which was something I thought we dealt with back in 1863.

You just equated someone who willingly came to the U.S. and stays in the U.S., despite the low wages they command ... with someone living in slavery. I imagine anyone who has lived in actual slavery would be slapping his or her forehead.

Pretty surreal seeing Obama welcoming the man who questioned if he was really an American to the White House as his successor.
