Yeah, no chance a two-loss Ralphie gets into the playoff -- a statement that is preposterous on its surface from the beginning of the season.

Seriously, Wazzu at the Buffaloes this weekend should be fun. 1:30 p.m. kickoff. Might be able to make it.

Ralphie lost to USC and Michigan. If all three win out, that would give Ralphie wins over WAZZU, Utah and either WAZZU/UW in the Pac-12 title game, while their two losses would be to (probable) top-10 teams. Depending on how weird things get, Ralphie might have a very slight chance. But yes, Pac-12's best bet is to have UW win out.

    IMHO:

    1. Alabama (duh)
    2. Ohio State
    3. Wisconsin
    4. Louisville

    5. Michigan
    6. Penn State
    7. Clemson
    8. Washington

Needs more SEC and less Penn State, right? Rules are rules.

Yeah, if we're going to list Penn State twice in the Top 8, we need Alabama on there AT LEAST four times.

I'm trying to remember the last time Pitt had two wins against top 10 teams in the same year. Probably early 80s.

I stayed up until 1 watching the replaying of the game on ESPNU last night. I knew the outcome but still expected that field goal to sail wide.

What a fucking Saturday. I was in Athens and left the stadium thinking Georgia's upset would be one of the bigger stories of the day. By the time I got home, it had been moved inside next to the high school volleyball round-up, metaphorically speaking.

I do love that there is usually one Saturday during the season where everyone's shit turns sideways. The interesting thing about this one, as others have said, is that it might not affect the playoff at all. Clemson, Washington and Michigan can all still get in. If we were still in the BCS era, they would have been calling this "Armageddon Saturday." My thirst for chaos is not nearly as quenched.

Conference championship matter only as a means of making money.

So if you have a 3-loss Tennessee beat Alabama in the SEC championship game, should they go to the playoff? Should Alabama stay home if they lose?

I'd much rather see the conference championship games eliminated and the playoffs go to 8 teams.

Conference championships (the actual championships, not the games in which they are won) are among the criteria listed in College Football Playoff Selection Committee protocol:

flexibility and discretion to select a non-champion or independent under circumstances where that particular non-champion or independent is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country.
When circumstances at the margins indicate that teams are comparable, then the following criteria must be considered:
    • Championships won
    Strength of schedule
    Head-to-head competition (if it occurred)
Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory)

Selection Committee Protocol | College Football Playoff

That's not enough to put 3-loss Tennessee in the playoff, but it would act as a tiebreaker for, say, 2-loss Oklahoma or Wisconsin (or Penn State) vs. 1-loss Louisville.

Oh, but the Vols won the Battle at Bristol championship. I saw the confetti drop and the hats handed out, so that must have been a pretty big deal.
