OK: First of all, I absolutely love a good Reuben sandwich......and the new Reuben Sandwich from Subway.....is nothing like a good Reuben sandwich.

I won't eat corned beef or whatever the meat on the sandwich is. But I love sauerkraut, and grilled cheese sandwiches are my guilty pleasure. One of my favorites is a grilled cheese (using Swiss or Elemental or something similar) on rye with sauerkraut. So it's a reuben without the corned beef and the Russian dressing. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. And it's early in the morning.

If you don't like corned beef, a "reasonable" substitute is turkey.
I've never tried it, but I've heard it will do in a pinch.

Not sure, but I'm thinking he's a vegetarian.

Yeah, I won't eat turkey either. But I get that substitution. Probably not as good, though, if you really like a traditional reuben.

I still like my grilled cheese with sauerkraut. Without the Russian dressing, too, which I find kind of disgusting.

I have no idea if this is true, but in the movie "Quiz Show," the character played by Rob Morrow mentions that the Reuben Sandwich is the only "truly invented" sandwich and that it was a winner in a national sandwich contest in the 1950s. A google search comes up with a half dozen different stories purporting to explain the origin, so who knows?

Subway is using the fact there are many different origin stories in one of its ads for the Reuben, I believe.

Then fish is the obvious substitute.

There's a few places here in the Bay Area that make pretty good turkey Reubens. I'm not a huge fan of fatty meats so turkey is my go-to. It's a good combo but I'm not a Reuben traditionalist.

Go have a Reuben from Subway and a Budweiser and watch their heads explode.

Arby's Reuben is disgusting slop. I've found that, pretty much, if a chain restaurant has a Reuben stay the hell away from it.
