If you define the religion of over a billion people as your enemy in some way, instead of tens of thousands of potential enemies (people willing to act as terrorists in the pursuit of their particular vision of said religion) you now have over a billion. G. W. Bush went out of his way over and over to make that distinction. Was he soft on terrorism? No. While a man of many poor judgments, he was not motivated by hate and fear.
PS: Obama was heckled by a member of Congress during a State of the Union address. So spare me the pearl clutching about a politician of notorious anti-gay views being booed at a Broadway musical. Hate and fear generate hate and fear right back.

What makes Mike Pence concerning to the LGBT community goes far beyond his stated views on marriage equality and includes his long track record of pushing discriminatory legislation, several times successfully.
