The Jamocha shake is great though, especially mixed with blackberry brandy.

Wouldn't that be a Montreal smoked meat sandwich? I'm not sure if that's the same thing (I thought Montreal smoked meat was more like pastrami), though I don't think it really matters. You probably made a good choice. I think when they had the NHL All-Star Game in Montreal a couple years ago, Mike Babcock had a special smoked meat sandwich run for his whole coaching staff.

In relation to previous discussion of the topic, I believe a turkey sandwich with the rest of the Reuben ingredients is called a Rachel (or at least that's what I've seen it called in the Upper Midwest). I am aware that the official recipe calls for Russian dressing, though I think just about every one I've ever had was with thousand island, mostly because I'm guessing the big restaurant supply companies probably don't sell Russian in bulk.

The reuben is always my go-to when I visit a restaurant and I don't know what's good. Almost always going to be at least OK with what you end up with. That said, I was back visiting friends in a town I used to work a couple weekends ago, and I went to a restaurant around the corner from my old apartment. The bartender recognized me, and as I was thumbing through the menu to see what one of their specialties I should go with, he said they changed the way they did their reubens and instead of doing the pre-sliced stuff, they smoked their own briskets and cut by hand. Holy crap, that sandwich might have been the best part of the whole trip.

And as for Subway, fuck them. That said, I'm guessing a Subway reuben probably tastes like all of the other Subway sandwiches. Unfortunately, it's one of a limited number of places within walking distance of the office, so I go there every so often and normally get chipotle southwest or horseradish sauces on random subs just so they taste like something other than random organic matter.

No, it was a Reuben. I have had plenty of smoked meat from and in Montreal and it incredible.

I see. Sorry to judge - given your avatar, I'm sure you knew the difference. Honestly, I wrote most of that tome above because reading about reubens was making me hungry.

I wish McDonalds would throw a McBone out there and watch it sell.
