Donald Trump’s protocol-breaking telephone call with Taiwan’s leader was an intentionally provocative move that establishes the incoming president as a break with the past, according to interviews with people involved in the planning.

The historic communication — the first between leaders of the United States and Taiwan since 1979 — was the product of months of quiet preparations and deliberations among Trump’s advisers about a new strategy for engagement with Taiwan that began even before he became the Republican presidential nominee, according to people involved in or briefed on the talks.

The call also reflects the views of hard-line advisers urging Trump to take a tough opening line with China, said others familiar with the months of discussion about Taiwan and China.

 

At least he isn't treating phone calls like Twitter.

Trump's thing is going to be cutting through some Gordian knots of confusing policy. Maybe it will have disastrous long-term consequences and maybe there won't, but I can understand why it appeals to Trump and his voters.

I can understand the sentiment that it is dumb that we can sell arms to Taiwan but not call them by name. Or that we can't actually do anything about illegal immigrants so they exist in a sort of quasi-legal limbo.

"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A man who said he was investigating a conspiracy theory about Hillary Clinton running a child sex ring out of a pizza place fired an assault rifle inside the Washington, D.C., restaurant on Sunday injuring no one, police and news reports said.

Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Aquita Brown said police detained a 28-year-old man from Salisbury, North Carolina. The deputy mayor for public safety and justice said on Twitter the suspect has been identified as Edgar Maddison Welch."


"As CBS affiliate WUSA reported previously, using the hashtag #PizzaGate, an imaginary story about the popular pizza shop was spread across social media and websites associated with the “alt-right” movement, accusing its proprietors of allowing Bill and Hillary Clinton and her former campaign manager to run a child sex slave ring from the business.

As a result, the pizza place has been hammered by thousands of threats and bizarre, unsubstantiated tales about child sex trafficking online for weeks.

WUSA reported that they found two women, who declined to give their names, banging on the patio at the pizza place in late November. The women were looking for the alleged tunnels used to traffic children.

“All of this is an underground tunnel that helps take the kids and transport them back and forth so they can can do these rituals,” said one of them. “They are putting a lot of curses and spells over the city. They are kidnapping the children who are missing. They were never missing because D.C. know where they are.”

Truth be told, that was the price our nation's first black POTUS was going to pay no matter who he was. There was going to be a radical, racist backlash to anybody in Obama's situation. GOP got control of state legislatures by dog-whistling "take my country back" nonsense, and everything flowed from there: surgical gerrymandering of House districts, voting restrictions they admitted were based on race.

 

The right wing screech machine has been shrieking about the neegros taking over for 40 years. Since Reagan. Since Nixon. Since George Wallace.

 

The least we could have done is send out an official press release saying that instead of pissing off Russia, we are now going to commence pissing off China.
