And suddenly that regular season championship is worth something again.

I also think Auburn has a right to play for the national championship.

Is it? Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State and USC might disagree.

A first-round loss in the playoffs?

That would look like this for this season ...
#16 Appalachian State at #1 Alabama
    #9 USC at #8 Wisconsin
    #13 Temple at #4 Washington
#12 Western Michigan at #5 Penn State
#11 Florida State at #6 Michigan
#14 San Diego State at #3 Ohio State
    #10 Colorado at #7 Oklahoma
#15 Western Kentucky at #2 Clemson

Not a whole lot of appointment viewing in those eight first-round matchups.

Would anyone have bothered to watch Michigan at Ohio State if we knew we'd see them both again in a 16-team playoff?

There is a great danger of diluting the regular season as college basketball has done. But there's more at stake doing it in football.

Colorado-Oklahoma and USC-Wisconsin are both very intriguing.

They're good games, but are they intriguing as part of determining the national championship? We've seen repeatedly that none of them can match the top six teams.

Except the Second Best Team Ever.

True. To clarify, I meant it was intriguing to see how badly the '36 Yankees of college football would beat down lowly Wisconsin.

Michigan and Florida St. are already playing in the Orangutan Bowl.
