Is "one-off mistake" an attempt at an anodyne phrasing of "fucking bald-faced lie"?

Do you really think it is? You've already said -- likely correctly, I might add -- that most everyone makes a choice and then looks for evidence to justify it. Does it matter st that point whether the evidence is fake or not?

Was it? It probably was. Or at least a wildly irresponsible guess.

Yes, it is, because if fantasy replaces fact, rational decision making becomes impossible. The purpose of political debate is to synthesize a majority decision reaction to existing circumstances. If non-existing circumstances are part of the process, it's ruined.
PS: I find it hard to believe we're on a journalism board and someone is arguing facts don't matter. If so, why the hell did our business even exist? Where was the demand?

By the way, can we stop pretending like "the media" fell hook, line and sinker for Reid's claim? Because they didn't. At all.

    1) You need to read up on the myth of the rational voter

    2) As re: your "facts don't matter" jab, you are responding to an imaginary post.

We were one of three channels in a three-channel universe. 22.5 million households watched an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies in 1964. (Hint: It wasn't because the dialogue was intelligent).

If you read something about that bugging in 1972 that made you feel queasy, there weren't all kinds of places to go to where you could be told, "Don't worry! It's all lies! Anyway, President Johnson once did something bad, too! Four more years!"

Uncle Walter told you it was serious. And so it was.

"Does it matter if the evidence is fake or not." That's a direct quote of you.
I know voters are irrational. That's an undisputed fact, or should be. But they're not totally irrational all the time. There's a demand for information that is accurate which is as powerful a force as the demand for information which supports prior beliefs whether it's accurate or not.

    I wish it were so.

It's nowhere near close to being so. Not in 2016. And not in 1916, either. There is a reason people keep skeletons in closets instead of parading them around.

The Western Allies were presented with "accurate information" about the Holocaust when the Red Army liberated the first of the death camps. They DISMISSED the information, claimed it was a gross exaggeration. Why on earth would they have done that if what you say is true?

How do we know it was a fucking bald-faced lie? Romney never released his tax returns to refute it. People were talking, you know.
