I have accepted the 1 in 5, assuming that sexual assaults includes incidents somewhat lesser than rape.

Well, the conservatives don't release balloons or hold a parade every time school taxes go up or down.

A big part of the 1 in 5 thing for me is the push to broaden the definition of sexual assault. Until that is synchronized and uniformly enforced, there are always going to be huge differences in opinions on what should be objective statistics but aren't.

There's a guy on my Facebook feed like that w.r.t. lefty/righty politics. He made some pop about the Electoral College and I pointed to a couple of counter-examples to his example. His lefty-as-hell (like him) daughter -- a doctoral candidate in history at a (ahem) very prominent Midwest university -- chimed in backing me up, at which point he went "speaks to a broader point" on the both of us. I'm thinking, shit man, when you've got ideologues on both sides in agreement that your position's wrong (and they're in agreement as to why it's wrong), you might want to rethink things.

Yeah, none of that applied there. There was no disconnect - mainly because the editorial board worked in the newsroom.

As I mentioned, we'd get people yelling LIBERAL about the most innocent of stories. I didn't know, for example, the city building walking trails was a liberal waste of money.

This person is calling the paper "liberal" because it covers news about people he/she doesn't like without saying "this is bad" in the headline or story. It may not be disingenuous, but it's moronic.

Well, they're favorite radio talk show hosts tell them that the mainstream media is liberal, so obviously everything in the newspaper is a liberal story, agenda or slant.

It's not that simple. Maybe there was a service/vigil for a slain police officer that got buried inside the section. Letter writer wants to know why that didn't get 1A treatment. Stuff like that, over time, adds up to form an opinion that isn't always off the mark.

One of my pet peeves -- by the way -- is newspapers and especially TV stations covering vigils, balloon releases and walks on the anniversary of someone's death.

I know they do it because it's easy and scheduled, but if 20-50-100-300 people are murdered in your area every year, it's not news to celebrate a one-year dead anniversary unless it's some highly unusual case.

Just stop. Go do a freakin' story on why some many people are dying and how to stop it.

But what if she was really hot and white? (Like that's not redundant.)
