There is no conceivable excuse for this. It's nothing short of bizarre, and really shows how out of his depth Trump is. He's treating every day like it's Ivanka's Make-A-Wish day.

I'm plenty concerned about the South China Sea. China is presenting us with a fait accompli... they've dredged those islands larger, improved and built bases on them, and now they are militarizing them. They are betting that we are not willing to go to war over the Spratley Islands. I don't think we have the diplomatic muscle to stop them. It is possible that if every other country in that area goes in with us and tries to apply enough pressure to push them out that it can be done, but I doubt it happens. China is playing the 800 pound gorilla.

I still believe that the Chinese would not have overtly announced in plain language that they were putting in weapons emplacements if Trump had not followed up his phone call by announcing that he really didn't care about the "One China" policy. We would have known, of course, that's pretty elementary intelligence gathering - but putting it out there in plain language is says "Ok, if you want to play silly games we can give you something to play with."

 

What are Ivanka Trump's actual qualifications to do anything other than fuck daddy?

 

Just as you seem more concerned with LOLing Democrats bemoaning Russian interference than why Trump is Russia's leader of choice but, hey, we all have our priorities.

Our diplomacy didn't get us very far with Russia or Iran in Syria either, did it.

Under president Obama, we have nothing but foreign policy failures.

 

Well, Obama is on the way out. I'm sure Trump will back China down fast, though.
