    When you're issuing a statement to wish believers a happy holiday, you don't refer to the events as having allegedly occurred, so as to not offend non-believers.

    It would be just as absurd to issue a Hanukkah statement in such a way as was suggested.

    You can wish believers a happy holiday without digging that deeply into the religion's language.

    I suppose he could have referenced Santa instead of Jesus.

    Seems like a concession to an over-simplified narrative.

    The roles religion hold in folks lives are beautifully diverse and differ individual to individual, though they flow toward something more communal. To treat religion or Christendom as a monolith is for the most part cheapening it, but in many ways it was baked into the original identity politics.
