Smoked the marijuana like a cigarette ... and paid the price.

You think? It's a hell of a pop song, in my opinion. And ubiquitous in its moment. For a brief six-month span or so, it seemed like he was going to own the airwaves for years to come

And as far as the video goes, probably captured a song about as well as any I can recall. I couldn't wait for that video to turn up again and again. What a collection of stunning people.

He had already done that, though. "Father Figure" got so much play on one station that when they finally released "One More Try" from the album, they had to promote that they were no longer playing FF as a "new" song.

    A wild exaggeration.

Not sure about that. There really wasn't a whole lot else happening in pop music in '87, '88. It's fair to say he was a really, really big star at that point, as big as anyone else out there.

Also noted: My daughters, 22 and 16, both said "Who?" when I reacted to the push notification.

Not surprising. He really hadn't put himself out there over the past decade.

But anybody who merits this was a pretty big deal in his time.

And a lot of '80s music was played in our house, but he was not part of the rotation. His music really did not hold up very well with time, not in the same way as Prince or Madonna or Springsteen.
