During the recession, put my money into some natural resources fund (oil, natural gas, and mining). A few baby seals and some birds were killed in the process, and I'm sure a few kids got cancer due to my contributions, but still pulled in a decent return.

No hurry ... all in good humor, my good man.

  5. Figure out what you're going to do with your time! It's the biggest suprise that hits people when they retire. Who will you "play" with? Where will your social connections come from? Most men get them from work. You can't play with your friends if they aren't retired either.

Sad thing is, I know of more than a few people who bailed and missed several highly profitable years before getting back in. They've yet to recoup their losses. Would have recouped their losses, and more, if they'd just stayed put. Same with anyone who got out last January when the market was in free-fall.

I don't pretend to know much about finance.
Someone did tell me when I was young, you haven't really lost anything until you sell at a loss.

When my wife took her masters in architecture, she did a thesis under the supervision of this guy who retired a few years later. The fall after he retired we ran into him and his wife at one of those homecoming things and asked him how he was liking retirement. Before he could say a word, his wife blurted out, "Oh my God! Every day! What's for lunch! What's for dinner! Drives me crazy!"

On January 3, I predicted I would retire in 2017. I now know I will retire, effective June 1, 2017.

Being old worked in my favor this time.

Wait ... was it wrong to sink all my money into Twinkies and Damn, Daniel sneakers?
