The government having the right to mandate economic activity.

We could be a couple of tweets and a rubber-stamp congress away from a Bible tax, whereby all citizens must purchase a King James Bible (for its historical significance of course, *not* for a religious reason) or else be taxed $5,000, and the Court precedent has already okay'd it.

Realistically, it was a semantic error by the administration to label it a "penalty." They should have framed it as a health care tax which everyone must pay, but those who have health insurance, via their employer or the public health exchange, receive a tax break. It's basically the same thing, except you avoid telling people you're going to penalize them for not purchasing health insurance.

We probably could use a constitutional amendment to prevent the government from forcing you to buy a religious text.

You could tell me what your perception of effective tax rates has to do with the idea of whether spending is required on matters such as health insurance and mortgage interest. (Hint: Spending is required on one but not the other.)

Do you have automobile insurance? That's a state-mandated purchase in my state. Good thing, too.

Once again: Why does someone who carries a mortgage get to pay a lower tax rate?

Anna Scampone Miller Goes the same for you POMPOUS bitch. 65 MILLION PEOPLE disagree with you and think you are the bully. What ever did you do for this country. The people have made you rich and famous. Your lack of respect for all of us is to say the least, DISGUSTING. Thank you for showing us you don't deserve what we have given you.
Now shut up and go back to your ivory tower and live your life that is so much better than the struggles most of us face everyday. You have joined the sewer rats of the democrats.

Louis Warmoth Can I be a mysogynist? Would I qualify if I say meryl streep is a leftist, half-brained, half-baked idiot? Gee, I hope so. I don't want to have to resort to stronger terminology. For example: leftist, half-brained, half-baked bitch. That would be unseemly and out of character, for me. Stupid bitch.

I think Rick's point is that you're not required to purchase a car, and you're not required to pay auto insurance if you don't own one.

It is meant as a penalty no matter how you word it. There was a Supreme Court case in Minnesota about taxing newspapers punitively that we all probably studied that I can't remember the exact name of off the top of my head.

It isn't a religious text in this context. The hypothetical law clearly states that it is being purchased as an appreciation of its historical and cultural significance.

Because we felt like it was good tax policy to encourage investing in communities.

I am still at a complete loss what this has to do with the government requiring someone to carry health insurance or pay a penalty. I think you're confused about whether people actually HAVE to buy homes.

I actually don't. Because I don't own a car. I'm allowed to not own a car, for now. Unless Trump decides he needs some more votes in Michigan and forces me to buy one.

Heck, I could choose not to have insurance if I bought a car and only used it on private property. Car insurance isn't a universal mandate, it is a barrier to entry for use of a public service. If you want to run a series of state-run hospitals and make insurance a requirement for using them, Im all for it

State and local governments require kids to go to school. They also require kids receive immunizations in order to gain entry to school.

    Public health is a thing.
