Likewise we feel like it's good tax policy to encourage investing in your own health insurance.

Because the net result is the exact same thing.

You don't have to buy a house. You just pay a slightly higher tax rate.

Of course it is. But don't underestimate the power of good marketing. This was bad marketing, plain and simple.

I'm sure you believe fervently that you're right.

    But you're wrong.

Please take your condescension elsewhere. I support the ACA and I previously was a consumer on my state's health exchange. I was pointing out the flaw in Gee's point.

No, government doesn't require immunizations. It just puts up some hoops if you don't want to vaccinate your kids.

    Please. Be more specific.

People who choose not to buy a house pay a slightly higher tax rate than people who do buy a house.

But those "hoops" are legitimate medical contraindications to receiving immunizations. And it's precisely the reason a lot of governments are getting rid of the "personal belief exemption."

I wasn't condescending to you. I'm pointing out that health care is fundamentally different than almost every other insurance-based practice, because of the public impact of HEALTH. So comparison to car insurance or mortgage deductions is pointless.

In one case, the tax was pre existing and you are being given a break.

In the other, the "tax" was specifically added to the rolls as a punitive measure against those not following the mandate. It is only a tax in name as a dodge around limitations on power, which should be seen as illegitimate
