Any argument that implies others need to pay for something (a human right!!!) eventually leads to something along the lines I posted.

Maybe I'm missing something. Why would they be paying? Why wouldn't fees to healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies and insurers be negotiated?

    Apropos of nothing in particular...

Back in the late 80's, early 90's, Toyota dealers here in the states kept pestering corporate in Japan to offer a full size pickup. They did very well with the Hilux, but they knew the demand was there for a full size truck. Toyota finally offered the T-100, which was pretty much a dog. It didn't do well at all, which confirmed corporate's opinion. Finally a Texas dealer had a brainstorm. The next time a big group of factory bigwigs came over from Japan, he bought tickets to the Dallas Cowboys game, as a chance to show them some American culture. Then he got them to the game early and drove them around the parking lot to show them how many Ford and Chevy pickups were in the lot.

The Toyota Tacoma came out a couple of years later and has been a big success.

Well, bless Chuck Schumer for calling McConnell on his hypocritical bullshit. That needed to be done, and he handled it perfectly. Nothing like choking him on his own words.

This notion that you create a command economy with regard to something, and then you "negotiate" price is mind boggling.

Negotiation -- to find efficient prices -- requires freedom and competition. Otherwise, what you have is a central planner price fixing a market for something -- to try to create something for nothing.

Price fixing in the short term, creates shortages, inefficiencies and hardship for a lot of people. We have a lot of experience with this. In the long-term, it is unsustainable. At best, you rack up a ton of debt trying to sustain it, until you no longer can.

The Soviet Union put a command economy over everything, and it "negotiated" price the way you are using the term -- i.e. price fixing. It didn't create prosperity. It created shortages, misery and it eventually bankrupted itself.

And what I am pointing out isn't "ideology," @Michael_ Gee -- if that was directed at me. :) It is reality. Ideology would be me saying that I believe in freedom -- that I believe I should be free to live my life without anyone having claims on me, or what I work for or earn -- provided I don't interfere with their ability to live freely. That would be my ideology in this. And the ideology ends there.

The rest -- pointing out the reality of what centrally planning economic activity creates is not ideology. It's someone who isn't letting their ideology blind them to reality.

I agree that we need to better enforce our antitrust laws if that's what you mean.

In what language does the Latin phrase "non sequitur" translate as "cranberry"?

The Toyota Tacoma was on the market before the T-100 and was a small pickup when it was introduced. The Tacoma is now classified as a mid-size pickup and is still popular.

Toyota's full-size pickup is the Tundra and was introduced in 1999.
