It remains a marvelous coincidence that the people most fixated on making this a "free" economy are those with enough money to think they won't meet the same fate as those filthy poors if the government stops trying to help people.

When making the case that said company, though its relationships with other companies, generated said revenues, a bit of perspective w.r.t. the size of said revenues seems appropriate. Put another way: Are we really to believe that ExxonMobil risked the shitstorm that would accompany violating those sanctions for a measly one-hundred-seventy-seventh of a percent of revenues?

@cranberry ... True story about ExxonMobil ... guy I was in my doctoral program with was a financial analyst at Mobil for a brief while (this would have been in the 80s). He swears that for a long time they had literally misplaced a $100 million refinery. Meaning their books showed a $100 million refinery asset somewhere ... they just didn't know where. They looked for it awhile and then were told to forget about it, as $100 million in assets was pretty much immaterial given the sheer size of their balance sheet. It was starting to cost more to find it than finding it would be worth.

    That's why I'm skeptical.

Guy in one of my business classes worked in Home Depot corporate office. He swore that until the early to mid 2000s they kept all their books on plain old Excel spreadsheets and only switched when the amounts in play literally exceeded what the software could compute.

I get that. But it doesn't mean the people who actually worked on these particular deals weren't playing fast and loose with the rules in their zeal to to make a few million dollars. Maybe it speaks to the corporate culture?
