I don't mean to suggest that SecEd has no power. If you'll just think about some pretty prominent kerfuffles around here -- e.g., the "Dear Colleague" letter re: sexual assault -- it's clear that the SecEd can set the tone in consequential ways. But I think you're way the hell overstating how much the SecEd can actually do.

I've seen comparisons with Palin on this forum. After reading this, thank Tebow Palin's career in elective politics ended in Alaska.

I agree the SecEd doesn't have much unilateral power, at least in terms of rule-making. It's not as if her agenda is somehow much different than let's say a moderate (in terms of intra-part ideology, not moderate in colloquial terms) Republican. I'm more offended about Amway. How many people are in her downline?

Al Franken really showed her, though. Wonder if he knew the difference between growth and proficiency in 2008?
