Here's the story of how a hugely important space mission -- landing a probe on Titan and sending back data -- was saved by an early test and some remarkable ingenuity. I love it because it's a great example of how scientists and engineers encountered a problem and, in the words of Matt Damon in The Martian, "scienced the shit out of it" to solve it.

IIRC, Voyager 2 had a similar problem. The main antenna for transmitting data didn't deploy properly, so they had to use a smaller one and then reprogram the probe in flight. They always compared it to talking to someone who was deaf in one ear.

 

I live next door to the Air Force's top research facility, and I think about half my neighbors are working on laser projects. Big things are right around the corner for that tech, IMO.

 

Building laser weapons that are portable and can be used tactically will require exponential advances in power storage. A death ray strong enough to cut an armored vehicle in two requires fearsome energy.

 

And, yet, it's inevitable.
