AFL-CIO will be cheering this. So will the Sanders and Warren supporters.

Paul Ryan on Hugh Hewitt's show on Jan. 4:

HH: Yeah, it’s extraordinarily important. Let me close where there is disagreement between apparently Team Trump and the House Republicans on trade. You know, Smoot-Hawley, everybody knows it caused the Depression, or at least it prolonged the Depression.

    PR: Right.

HH: Do you think we’re headed towards a Smoot-Hawley era?

PR: No. No, we’re not going to be raising tariffs. We think tax reform is the better way of addressing imbalances, leveling the playing field without starting trade wars, without having the adverse effects that you get with protectionism or trade wars. We think leveling the playing field on taxes, reducing the cost on American businesses by reducing regulatory costs, health care costs, that’s the secret to making American businesses more competitive, not raising prices or raising tariffs, but lowering the costs and leveling the playing field.

No chance Congress allows a tariff on Mexican imports.

    Here's where it gets tricky.

Many of those Messican-made products are made for Murrican-owned companies. You think the big elites want tariffs put on their foreign-made products? Think again.

He's a rotten guy. But he's running the show now, he's got a chip on his shoulder, and the president's ear.

This administration will take the kernel of truth about the media - and there is a kernel - and make it a whole acreage.

What's sad is Bannon craves the NYT's validation. It's so sad. He wanted to sit at the cool kids table and got told no. Hell hath little fury like an ideaological conservative scorned.

It's been pointed out elsewhere, but if Trump's people were really mad at the Times, they wouldn't let him talk to Haberman and they wouldn't leak the way they have. This is a pro wrestling schtick for their rube base, who don't read that paper and therefore don't know how Trump's own aides are dishing dirt on a daily basis. In fact, this is just the sort of thing such a leaker might do to cover his tracks.

They'll couch this not as a tariff, but as a tax reform. "It's time foreign companies importing to the US paid their fair share!"

This post deserves acknowledgement. Only the percentage is off slightly, otherwise you totally nailed this prediction.

Mr. Anti-Tax Grover Nordquist says he is "troubled" by the Mexico thing because it will hurt middle-income Americans - but isn't going to oppose it.

They've got to start drawing the line for their "conservative principles" somewhere. Let's face it, the only reason they embraced Trump is to ride into power on his coattails.
