    That is a great idea.

    What I try to do is always respond to a post, not the person. That is where people really go wrong on here -- they disagree with someone about something and they make it personal. Once they go there, they take it to a bad place, and it often escalates.

    I have gotten much better at that over time, I think, and I think it has even become second nature.

    I refute the premise, which assumes the existence of 'constructive discussion' in 'online communities.'

    There may be enjoyable discussion in online communities, but in most cases there is not constructive discussion.

    Make it personal with a person they've often never met in person. Always found that funny and never could understand that.
