And you can tell sometimes that the networks are trying very hard not to show wide swaths of empties, but with some shots there's no way to avoid it.

Midweek races? Is NASCAR really treading the same path to overexposure as the NFL and college football?

There's race on Thursday night this week, with the Daytona qualifying races. Would've been an interesting test to air it on Fox and see what the ratings are like, not to mention give the 500 a little "hey, this is happening Sunday!" bump. Instead they buried it on FS1.

Ah, what used to be known as the twin 125s. That's different than a regular-season race. But there's no way Fox gives up a night of prime time during sweeps for NASCAR.

Unless there are two rainouts and someone runs over a jet dryer.

Good Lord, they're dropping like flies in the Xfinity race. Couldn't even get through the first segment without two big crashes.

I would make a snarky comment about "Who watches Xfinity races?" but my TV is on Ole Miss-Mizzou basketball as the Tigers go for their 33rd consecutive road loss.

The segment thing is so gimmicky... I'm interested to see how it plays out in a real race, as opposed to The All-Star Race, but that'll catch my attention maybe once or twice.

A one-hour prerace show to lead into 30 minutes of ceremonies and hey look, there's Louisville-Syracuse one channel up. What world does Fox live in?

Getting a little racy as we approach the end of the first segment.

Think that will come into play more at non-plate tracks. I still hate the idea of counting what are basically "competition yellow" laps, but what are you going to do?

Also, it seems like the announcers have dialed back to about 80 percent slurping NASCAR instead of full throttle like years past.

Curious about the Toyotas' strategy of these green-flag stops early in the segment ... seems like a lot could go wrong with not much upside.
