Element of truth? It's not a Putin thing that Putin opponents and journalists who report things Putin doesn't like end up dead?

    Jesus Christ, man.

Why was it never called a Yeltsin thing?

Why was Yeltsin never called a thug, a killer?

If the same things happen under three presidents, it seems kind of silly to blame only one, does it not?

Yeah, that one. You give me hope, Steak. The one was who head of the Gambino family, and everyone knew it, and still got off on three different trials, that guy.

Just change Reagan to Trump. Still applies.

I think people who offended the Russian leader badly enough have gotten killed pretty much as long as there has been one, from the Czars to the Communist Premier.

Mostly Putin gets talked about most because it makes the news when it happens now, and because he's the one in power.

I guess so. But it seems to make as much sense as the "fix" in the 1972 Olympic basketball final. "Let's do nothing for 39 minutes and 57 seconds, at which time, if by some miracle the USA isn't winning in a blowout and the game can be decided by one basket, we'll do everything we can to let the USSR score in those final 3 seconds."

And yet, when you review the actions taken by off-the-court Olympic officials at the end of the game, how many chances the Russians were given to win, and the obvious rules infractions that were overlooked, how can you come to any other conclusion? The fix was in.

But it didn't get talked about when it happened under Yeltsin. Hell, we interfered in their 1996 election to get this guy re-elected.

THAT'S my point. We didn't care what bad things happened in Yeltsin's Russia because he was our puppet.

We pretend to care what happens in Putin's Russia because he's not our puppet.

I'll take "American Double Standards" for $200, Alex.

They were given one legitimate chance to win. Here are the three so-called chances everyone is so familiar with:

    1. Russians inbound ball, call time out. Confusion reigns over whether they should have been allowed to call time out (turns out they should not have been, but that's neither here nor there.)
This is NOT, however, a "chance to win." They simply inbounded the ball and called time out, ostensibly to set up a chance to win.

    2. Russians inbound ball, horn sounds, Americans celebrate. This was NOT "a chance to win," either, as the clock was fucked up. It read 50 seconds, and the horn went off as soon as the ball left the hands of the player inbounding the ball. Just a stupid fuckup that helped no one. Clock is reset to its proper place :)03), because the only "game action" that has occurred since Doug Collins' made free throws is the Russians inbounding the ball and calling an immediate timeout (see No. 1, above).

    3. Russians inbound ball to Belov, who scores winning basket. This was the USSR's only legitimate "chance to win", and it happened to succeed. If the Americans intercept the inbounds pass or knock it away, game over.
