Thirsty Dawg in Holcomb, KS makes a damn good burger. And when you say a order of fries......they bring you a MASSIVE order of fries.

Charcoal Pit in Wilmington, Del. where I grew up. Great milkshakes and sundaes, too. Otherwise, there was a Greek coffee shop at the corner of Hereford and Newbury in Boston's Back Bay in the '70s that made a magnificent cheeseburger, thick enough you could have it rare if you wished and it was still good. Place has been gone since Reagan's second term, alas.

This was my first thought when reading this thread.

The Squeeze In in Sacramento served a pretty quality burger.

I'm not picky where I get my burger but the ones I've liked the best basically give a damn about the items they top the burger with. Give me a patty that is hot and juicy, a crunchy high quality pickle or two, good crisp lettuce, spicy ketchup or a tangy barbecue sauce and a few onions or onion rings to finish it off. Don't go heavy with mayo if it's included and I'm good. There have been a few places that cross that threshold for me so it's hard to really judge a best.

After reading this yesterday, I wound up stopping for dinner tonight at a Culver's for the first time. Great burger, reminded me of Steak N Shake 25 years ago before the quality went downhill. Cheese curds and custard were great too.

Cheese curds and custard are the reason to go to Culver's. Mostly the cheese curds...

Steakburger at City Grille across from the Colorado State Capitol is a must-go place.

And, if you've never had In-N-Out, yes, it's worth the 30-minute wait.

I was in Orange County about a year and a half ago and wanted to try one of these while I was out there. Went on at 2:30 on a Sunday, thinking it couldn't possibly be that crowded. Drive through wrapped around the building and they had a guy outside with a headset taking orders, must have been 20-30 cars the entire time I was there. And not a seat to be had inside, luckily I found a open table outside.

While in college, I was always a much bigger fan of the barbecue at Andy's.

Massive fail. If I ever find out I have a week to live, I'll spend a day seeing how many of those things I can eat. The over/under will be 317.

On the burger, tried a new place in St. Louis today: Hi-Point Drive In or something like that. Played it fairly straight with a bacon cheeseburger. Freaking amazing.

The strawberry shake was even better. With bits of real strawberry, and the straw was about as big around as a dime, so it never got clogged. Those are the little things that matter.

Only time I had In 'N Out was in Vegas. Drive thru wait wasn't too bad. And I was with people in the know who correctly instructed me to order it Animal Style.

Good burger. Compares favorably to Shake Shack and Five Guys.

    I'll take the over ... :)

If there's a better-tasting treat when you're drinking than Potato Oles, I haven't had it yet. When I worked the closing shift at the downtown Iowa City T-John's, that would be how we'd get drunks out of the restaurant. "Free Oles to anyone who's ready to leave!" (We were going to throw them out anyway)

Duchess burgers, exclusive in Connecticut, are pretty damn good. Yet to eat a fast food burger that can top it as a medicinal hangover meal.
