I'll check out the video later, but from reading a couple of accounts of what bigpern23 posted, it's clear that if you get any Trumpista in a 1-on-1 and keep plugging away with the facts, they'll break down into the usual talking points that that mean nothing, try to deflect the question ala YF, emulate their boss and tell outright lies, or pull a Kellyanne and make up something like Bowling Green.

Unfortunately, only Cooper, Jake Tapper and, on occasion, Wolf Blitzer seem capable of this among folks on the air now. When she starts the NBC gig, I think Megyn Kelly can pull it off. Fox throws nothing but batting practice fastballs, while the rest may as well start each question with "talk about foreign policy ..."

 

About nine minutes in ... what an effing trainwreck! He sounds as convincing as Kenny Bania did trying to get more than one meal out of Seinfeld.

 

I think it is a good idea. It would allow the question of conflicts to be resolved while protecting his personal information - protection he would not have if he followed the years of precedent of release of returns by candidates/office holders.

Tax return information is confidential and not subject to FOIA only because Congress included that provision in the Internal Revenue Code. However, Congress also included a number of exceptions, including giving certain House and Senate committees (actually, other committees also have authority, with a slightly different process) the power to asks for an individual's returns. Where the taxpayer doesn't consent to the IRS providing the information, the committees can only review the returns in executive session.

Because of Trump's businesses, operated through series of flow through entities, there are legitimate questions about potential conflicts with domestic and foreign policy decisions. This would be a compromise answer that would allow a limited number of elected officials to privately review his returns to determine whether there is anything in those returns, such as income sources or holders of loans, that identify such conflicts - or show there are no conflicts. Potentially embarrassing information such as how much income he receives from licensing arrangements rather than real estate projects, or personal charitable contributions to organizations that would raise eyebrows among his base, or that he gives no charitable contributions, would not be public.

 

Finally watched it. She does 20 minutes of really bad theater to get to what's a really good point. But Jesus Christ does she try too hard to be John Oliver.

Trump was repeating Breitbart story that was a recap of a rant by radio talk show host Mark Levin. Or else he was informed by someone in Justice Dept. (hi, Jeff!) about FISA court-ordered taps sought by FBI and reported on by NYT prior to inauguration. Either way, he's delusional. The second way, there are transcripts of those calls which I believe would be of extreme public interest.

 

The Levin rant probably stemmed in part from this, but I also thought the Times was #fakenews.
