Supposedly Miami insisted on BC as a condition of joining the ACC because they recruit a lot of students from Boston. Swofford wanted Miami to solidify the Florida markets, and here we are.

Can't help but think UConn would have been a better choice, but Richard Blumenthal led the Big East lawsuit against the ACC, so they had no chance. In retrospect, ACC could probably have waited Miami out. No other conference was after them.

BC, of course, was in much better shape at the time. That was the Jared Dudley/Tyrese Rice era in hoops. Then they turned into Wake Forest North.

From a strictly competitive standpoint BC was just about an ideal addition at the time. Solid but not great at both basketball and football. The kind of team that added depth and quality to the schedule, but also wasn't really a threat to displace the mainstays at the top of the league.

    Then they got bad.

I vividly remember standing in the press box of Alumni Stadium hearing UMiami President Donna Shalala assure anyone within earshot Miami would never leave the Big East. Colleges are about the sleaziest business in the country, and sports are their sleaziest department.

And Presidents are the sleaziest heads over all of the sleaziest departments of the sleaziest business in the country.

I've said for several years that the NCAA might be the most corrupt business in America's history.

Youngstown State and Cleveland State open up. Any Buckeye assistants want to bail before Matta is dumped after next season?

I always liked the throwaway line about the BC pointshaving just before they whack Maury in Goodfellas.

    1. I enjoyed Waters' tenure at CSU. Was fun seeing them run off a strong stretch of competency (last 2 years aside). Not an easy gig.
    2. Could go on one of the old P-D threads, but damn this was painful to read (from a Pluto article - and I'm hardly a big copy-editing snob):

What are the odds that Johnny Jones is back at North Texas before the end of March? I'd say they're greater than zero.
