Just wait until @outofplace sees that the Rockland Jewish Family Service and the Catholic Community Services also received money. He'll be calling for the whole program to be defunded.

How far do you want to move the goalposts?

Bottom line - Zeroing out those block grants will negatively affect the Meals on Wheels programs around the nation.

(And, after looking the files, our CDBG amount has increased over the past few years. We got $25,500 last fiscal. So, yes, we will have to CUT!!! the budget if we can't find a way to replace that money. Given we're just about at the diminishing returns point on fundraising events, it will be a slog to raise it.)

I live in Birmingham, Alabama. Time after time, the only reason that policies in this state are dragged kicking and screaming into the Twentieth Century is because the Federal government steps in and forces the issue. If the hungry elderly here had to depend on the Alabama lege to eat we'd be burying malnourished bodies in quantity.

Federal programs are not all waste. They are not the enemy, no matter how hard the Republicans demonize them. Are they subject to bureaucratic bloat? Sure. Taking a look at things and trimming the fat and eliminating programs that have proved not to work is a good idea. Gutting government departments wholesale with a meataxe is not, and doubly so if it is done for political reasons and not after reasoned analysis.

"Give that back to the states" scares the shit out of me, because the yammerheads here elect any dumbshit if he has an (R) after his name and speaks the right code words.

As far as that, the R's are all about giving all the power back to the states - unless it's something that they don't agree with the states about. Legal marijuana? California's auto pollution controls, which were put in because L.A. in the Seventies looked like Peking does now? If it does not fit their policies, it's fuck the states, Federal overrides. They only like States Rights if a given policy is run the way they approve of.

More than that, they are going to dump all sorts of programs onto the states, who will have to figure out how to fund them. Alabama refuses to tax itself enough to fund the government that we now have. Anything that is dumped on the state by Congress is *not* going to be adequately funded. We have prisons containing four times as many inmates as they were designed to hold now.

Give it to the states is not a cure all, not even close.

They don't want to give power (or money) to the state and local governments either.

They don't think government should handle those problems on any level, because government is subject to waste, dishonesty and corruption.

No no no no no, they want all that stuff to be taken care of by the miracle of the marketplace. By good solid thinking biddnessmen and sweet benevolent corporations.

Turn everything over to corporations. No more problems with waste, dishonesty and corruption.

By the way, it should be noted that all these cuts are being proposed solely to offset the Defense increase.

None of this affects the deficit or debt at all.

So, where were Rockland County's priorities in 2014?

Why wouldn't they have been able to provide $10,000 to Meals on Wheals without the Community Development Block Grant program funds?

What could have been more important than feeding the elderly?

NEW CITY, NY -- County Executive Ed Day and Office of Community Development Director S. Ram Nagubandi today announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $1.1 million in federal funding through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program to local towns, villages and nonprofit groups.

"The CDBG program is a partnership with the federal government that allows Rockland County to undertake projects that otherwise would be impossible to fund in our current fiscal condition," said County Executive Day. "This money improves the quality of life for our citizens and our neighborhoods by helping local companies grow jobs, expanding access to health and social services and providing affordable housing."

Now I'm really curious. The sequester took place, right?

So did 4 million meals go unserved? 19 million? What happened?

Don't mind YF. He is a little upset today because Mayor DeBlasio was found innocent of committing any crimes and now will likely win another term as mayor here in NYC.
